Selbe river to be treated.

Sukhbaatar district authorities are into action to protect the Selbe river that runs across Ulaanbaatar.

To increase the river flow, a damn to be built. The damn building work is currently in progress.

The district authority also planted 1000 trees along the river bed last year, to increase the flow. The trees are growing this year and decorating the river.

No progress in 100,000 Apartments project

There has been no progress in the Government’s 100,000 Apartments project, meant to develop ger districts and to give the chance to low- and middle-income citizens to own apartments of their own. The lack of progress can be traced to the failure of the Development Bank to provide funds. At the moment, there is no indication when the bank would have the capital to finance projects.

The project was planned to be implemented over six years and a working group headed by the Deputy Minister for Road, Transportation and Urban Development, T.Purevdorj, was formed to oversee the work. It included representatives from the Mayor’s Office and the Ministries of Mineral Resources and Energy, and of Road, Transportation and Urban Development.

People’s hopes were raised but they wait in vain.

Mayor: Beavers can help river

Ulaanbaatar City Mayor G.Munkhbayar wants to introduce beavers into the Tuul river. He says the animals’ dams would improve the quality of the river. It’s not a new idea. “Mongolian scientists introduced beavers elsewhere in 1973, so they have experience,” Mr. Munkhbayar told a meeting of city officials. “We can work together with those scientists.”

“Restoration of the rivers which flow through the city is on the way and the most apparent example is Selbe river,” said Mr. Munkhbayar. “The restoration of the Selbe river has started with the support of youth organizations. The working group has been established and the budget set at MNT 600 million. First the working group will clean the river shore then they will increase the flow of groundwater into the river. That will increase the flow of the river and there will emerge a nice place to enjoy.”
